SNAME Student Chapter to receive International Recognition for Boat Design Competition

Chris Skiba, an apprentice graduate and piping designer in department E65 will co-present a paper entitled, Reaching Out to the Future Generation of Shipbuilders and Shipbuilding Leaders, at this September's Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo in Houston, TX. Chris, along with his co-authors Dr. Richard Boutwell (O36) and Bill Boze (E42), are presenting the accomplishments of the Apprentice School Chapter of SNAME's first-ever Boat Design Competition between local area high school students held this past March. This presentation marks the first written and presented society paper from a member of the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School Chapter of SNAME.

Skiba, the 2008 Boat Design Competition Lead, co-authored this paper outlining the design competition showing what motivated its conception, the planning and conducting of the event and what was learned. The paper goes into great detail about the merits for not just the high school students but also the experience and mentorship gained by the Apprentice School students from veteran SNAME members and naval architects. It was an opportunity to take lessons learned in the classroom and expand on them in a practical application. This competition was an excellent venue to spark interest and excitement in area students to the opportunities and careers in marine engineering and shipbuilding. The Apprentice School Chapter was so encouraged by the success of this year’s competition that they have broadened the scope and plan on taking it to the entire state of Virginia in 2009. It is a great honor to be presenting at this year’s conference and is a chance for national recognition for the SNAME student chapter and the Apprentice School. (Click here for a copy of the paper).
